Finn Juhl was among the most influential figures in post-war Danish design.

Trained as an architect, he brought an architectural sensibility to furniture, treating structure, proportion and negative space as integral parts of the composition. His work helped establish Danish furniture as an international benchmark for modern design.

Designed for France & Son in the 1950s, the FD 533 side table demonstrates this architectural approach.

The open frame and tapered legs define space without enclosing it and, in conjunction with the floating shelf, create a negative space that is as prominent a part of the design as the physical structure. The angular leg profile casts sharp shadows that emphasise this point, and reinforce the architectural character.

Executed in teak, this example remains in good original condition with a deep, even patina developed over decades.
