Ker-Xavier Roussel was a member of Les Nabis, a group of post-impressionist French artists working at the end of the 19th century. Fellow members included Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, with whom Roussel was close friends.

The catalogue of the 1999 exhibition ‘Ker Xavier Roussel - Reflections on a Changing World’ at Wolseley Fine Arts notes that Roussel was the most popular artist of the trio of friends during much of their lifetime, though Roussel’s name has subsequently faded in comparison.

This drawing of St Tropez contains annotated observations on colour. Many similar views can be seen in the sketchbooks of Bonnard, made on his regular visits to Roussel. Time has given the sheet a warm and charming colour, and the picture presents well in its frame.
