Jan Hoogsteyns (1935–2022) was a Belgian painter associated with postwar European figurative and still-life painting. His landscapes and still lifes often emphasise quiet, intimate subject matter.

His work is characterised by a restrained use of colour and a simplified, sometimes slightly naïve handling of form. This particular work has echoes of Ben Nicholson's early still lifes.

Hoogsteyns exhibited widely across Europe, including in Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions during his career.
