Félix-Hilaire Buhot was an experimental printmaker and a significant figure in the 19th century etching revival. Buhot is known to have etched copies of works by artists like Rembrandt, and this may be a copy of a Corot landscape.

This is an early state impression. There is another print where the plate has been further worked to add more detailed characters to the margin. Margins like this one were used frequently by Buhot and were known as symphonic margins.

Buhot’s margins were typically more detailed or more obviously related to the primary subject than in the present work. This more loosely worked trumpeter alters the mood of the accompanying landscape and completes an unusual picture.
